References to Jesus as the Lamb of God appear in Holy Scripture and have
Been used as an artistic symbol for Jesus since roughly the 4th Century.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus is called the Lamb of God for the first time,
When He goes to meet John the Baptist.
John the Baptist introduces Jesus to the crowd, saying:
"Behold the Lamb of God, Behold Him who takes away the sins of the world."
His reference calls to mind the Paschal Lamb of the Old Testament.
The earliest origins of the word "Pasch" is taken from
The ancient Greek and Hebrew words for Passover.
The wonderful story of how Moses kept faith with God and led the
Chosen People out of slavery in Egypt is told in the Book of Exodus.
Their liberation was finally set in motion, on what would become known as
"Passover" -- when homes marked with the blood of the lamb,
Were spared punishment from the Lord.
So, too, Jesus liberated us from the enslavement of sin and death.
Jesus is the perfect Paschal Lamb -- the perfect sacrficial gift.
Alleluia! He is risen! Jesus, the Lamb of God, takes away the sins of the world!
